Beam Deflection & Stress

A narrow point-load reference for two common beam cases.

Units
Beam case
Reference only: compare stress and deflection with project-specific limits before making any design decision.

Enter values and submit to see the result. Check a rectangular beam for either of the two supported point-load cases.

Method, limits, and assumptions

The section is rectangular, with second moment of area I = bh³ / 12 and extreme-fiber stress σ = Mc / I.

Cantilever/free-end load: M = PL and δ = PL³ / 3EI. Simply supported center load: M = PL / 4 and δ = PL³ / 48EI.

Results assume a prismatic, linearly elastic member and small deflection. The tool excludes shear deflection, self-weight, distributed or combined loads, buckling, lateral restraint, connection behavior, material allowables, and code checks.
