Method and assumptions
The usable length is the opening minus the left and right clearances. Elements are placed with the same clear gap between every pair and at both ends (so there are count + 1 equal gaps). Pitch is the element width plus one clear gap.
In count mode the gap is whatever remains after the fixed number of elements. In max-gap mode the tool finds the smallest whole number of elements whose clear gap does not exceed the target. A negative clear gap means the fixed count or size cannot fit the opening.
